Harry Boomer

Harry Boomer attended Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Va. and has called Greater Cleveland home since 1990. He is proud to live in the historic Hough neighborhood in Cleveland.

He has 36 years of news experience in Cleveland, for a total of 55 years in broadcasting as of 2026. He is the longest serving reporter at Channels 19 and 43.

Harry is a 2007 Broadcasters Hall of Fame Inductee. He is also a member of the Halls of Fame of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Associated Press, and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences/NATAS.

He was honored by receiving both a Silver Circle and Gold Circle Awards from NATAS, designating his being a 25 year veteran in Television and at least a 50 year broadcast veteran. Boomer has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Professional Journalists/Cleveland Chapter.

He is currently the Senior Reporter of 19 News and the Executive Producer and Host of WUAB 43 Forum, a public affairs program covering community issues.

His career began in Washington, D.C., where he was an on-air personality, talk show host and served in various management positions, including two stints as news director.

Harry came to Ohio in 1988 to manage and program WBXT-AM in Canton.

While covering assignments for WOIO/WUAB on a part-time basis in the early 1990s, Harry was a full-time reporter/producer at WCPN 90.3 FM, Idea Stream/Cleveland Public Radio, where he also served as assistant news director.

He was also a reporter, producer and major contributor to National Public Radio. Among other programs, Harry debuted a statewide news magazine program titled "INFOhio" for the radio station. Harry's familiar voice was regularly heard on a freelance basis for public radio specials on WCPN, once he became a full-time reporter for Channels 19 and 43 in Cleveland.

Harry has served as president of the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (GCLE-ABJ), three times, which twice was designated the Professional Chapter of the Year under his leadership. He was instrumental in bringing the National Association of Black Journalists 50th Anniversary Convention to Cleveland in 2025.

He has been a board member of the Ohio Associated Press, The Ohio Center for Broadcasting and during his time in Washington, D.C., he helped train hundreds of perspective broadcasters at the Columbia School of Broadcasting. He has served as a member of the Continuing Education Committee at Cleveland State University.

Harry has won awards from the Ohio Associated Press, Ohio Educational Telecommunications, Women In Communications, the Press Club of Cleveland and the National Association of Black Journalists, the Cleveland Society of Professional Journalists and The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences/NATAS.

Harry is active in the community, often serving as master of ceremonies at events throughout northeast Ohio. When he's not working (which isn't often), he enjoys talking politics and visiting friends and family around the country. Boomer is a father. He has two wonderful grandchildren.

Harry is truly a Baby Boomer: His last name is Boomer, he's the baby of a family of ten siblings, and he is a member of the Baby Boom generation.
